My husband and I are in the beginning stages of starting our own personal training studio, we were so happy to stumble across this site. We noticed that Shannon said he would be willing to answer any questions we had, so we called him. What a great guy, we could tell he was very genuine and cared even though we had never met him before! I loved the artical about what Using Psychology to find out what color to paint in your gym, I would never have thought about how the color choices we make affect our clients. We were actually already considering red as the main color, now we know better.
Thanks!

Hi Curtis, your absolutely right about the things to look for in marketing companies for fitness centers. Most gym owners don't do anything but look in the phone book and on other gym's brochures and copy what they are doing, and they don't even know if it works before they copy it. If it works i can guarantee you they will be using it for a long time, because no one will willingly lose money month after month without seeing results, so if you see another gym using the same marketing for an extended period of time, then you can bet it works.

When you see a gym starting to use the low cost tactics all the time like "no sign up fee and no contracts or 19.95 month", you can bet they don't know how to market. I use the no sign up fee sometimes, but not very often because i have raised my prices over everyone elses and have become known as the "High Priced Gym" and i get more members than i ever have. So why lower my rates or offer specials when i make twice as much money and get twice as many gym members as when i was competing for price.

That's why i am so glad there's people like you and me out there that are willing to tell people how to market there gym's and fitness centers without charging them for all advice. And i believe it's because we love the gym marketing business and all we are doing is making better reputations in the gym industry. But we also have familys and want to get paid for what we know.

With that said, gym owners can save way more than you spend on marketing in the long run by using someone like Curtis Mock at gymmarketing.com or me Shannon Cook at fitnessmarketing@comcast.net, to do your marketing unless you want to invest as much time in learning marketing as we have, and you MUST have a love for the marketing business like I have to do it successfully.

Thanks Curtis for commenting, shannon

For your readers, here is a list of things they want to make sure to be aware of when dealing with a health club marketing or health club promotion company:

1. What is your first impression? Does the company blatantly overpromise? Do they sound like a smarmy salesperson? GO WITH YOUR GUT! It is correct more times than it's wrong.

2. What is the reputation of their leadership? Do they appear anywhere on the Internet? Do they have a good reputation in the industry? If not, they are flying below the radar for a reason.

3. Can they explain everything about the campaign they plan to run or does it seem they are hiding something? You need to understand how everything works so that there is no confusion once it has started.

4. Can you tell they are overpromising on the results they plan to provide you? If they say they will generate 200k in cash for you in 4 short weeks or that they will increase your EFT by 15k/month...you should be able to see right through it.

5. Do they have a low barrier to entry program so you can get a feel for them? I.e. A low cost consulting program that you can pay for initially to make sure they know what they're talking about. This will save you lots of money in the long run to determine if their ideals and working model is a good fit for your club.

Also, there's not much point in asking for references, they will always give you the good ones anyway. Go on your gut...always.

Thanks for the great blog Shannon!
